The six month continuity clock
The rule that catches people out is not the expiry date on the card. It is the gap since the last time you ran the process.
What continuity means
A welder qualification says you have demonstrated you can lay sound weld with a given process, position and material. The major codes all take the same view of what keeps that demonstration valid: you have to keep doing it. Go long enough without using the process and the qualification is no longer considered current, even though nothing on the paper has changed.
Six months is the common interval. ASME Section IX treats a welder qualification as expired for a process not used within six months. AWS D1.1 and API 1104 work on the same kind of period of effectiveness. The exact wording, and what your employer or the customer quality manual requires, is what governs on a given job, so read the code and the WPS you are working to rather than taking the word of a web page.
Why it bites
Say you are qualified on SMAW and GTAW. For eight months you run nothing but stick. Your card still shows both, your expiry date is a year out, and a quality manager asks for continuity records on the TIG qualification before you touch a stainless line. If you cannot show a qualifying weld inside the window, you are retesting, at your expense, usually on the day you were meant to be working.
The same thing happens in reverse when a welder assumes a lapse and retests unnecessarily because nobody wrote down the tie in they ran in March.
What a usable log looks like
The record does not have to be elaborate. What it has to be is contemporaneous and specific:
- Date of the weld
- Process run, spelled the way the code spells it (SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, FCAW)
- Where it was, ideally tied to a job or a ticket
- Anything that identifies the work, such as the line, the spool or the customer
Whoever maintains your qualification records, usually an employer or a testing body, signs off on continuity. Your log is what you hand them. A photo of a legible tally book has settled more than one argument, and a dated entry made the same week beats a reconstruction made in December.
Keeping the clock visible
The failure mode is not that people refuse to log welds. It is that nobody is counting the days. Six months is long enough that the gap opens quietly, and the moment you find out is the moment somebody asks.

A quick habit that works
Log the weld when you write the ticket. You are already on the phone, the date is already right, and the job is already selected. One extra tap at the end of the day is the whole practice.
