GWO certifications and the refresher cycle
A lapsed module keeps you off the tower no matter what else is current. Here is the shape of the standard and what to watch.
The two stacks
Global Wind Organisation training splits into two families. Basic Safety Training covers keeping you alive: working at heights, first aid, manual handling and fire awareness, with sea survival added for offshore work. Basic Technical Training covers the trade side: mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and installation modules.
On top of those sit the specialist modules a job may ask for, such as Advanced Rescue, Enhanced First Aid, Blade Repair, Slinger Signaller and Control of Hazardous Energies.
How the clock works
BST modules run on a refresher cycle, commonly two years, and each module carries its own validity. That is the part that catches people: the modules were probably taken together the first time, but a refresher taken on a job site in a different month shifts one of them out of alignment with the rest. From then on you have several dates, not one.
Providers record completions to WINDA, so your record is centralised, but nobody sends you a warning letter. The practical requirement is to know, this month, which module is closest to running out.
What a site will actually ask for
- Your WINDA ID
- The specific modules the scope of work requires
- Current dates on every one of them
- Whatever the manufacturer requires on top, which is often turbine specific
- OSHA 10 or 30 and a current first aid card in the United States
Most safety offices want that as one document rather than eight photos. A single packet listing each cert, its issuer, its number and its status is the thing that gets you cleared the same day.
Keeping ahead of it
Book refreshers around your rotation rather than at the last minute, since courses fill up and the useful ones are rarely in the town you happen to be working in. The trigger for booking should be a reminder at 60 days, not a project manager asking at 3 days.

One more thing worth logging
Keep the completion certificates themselves, photographed, in the same place as the dates. Providers close, records move, and the fastest way to settle a WINDA discrepancy is a legible photo of the certificate with the provider name on it.
